(A) While many religions take an anti-smoking stance, Native Americans are known to use tobacco for spiritual purposes and for healing acts. Banning tobacco products would hinder Native Americans religious practices (Tobacco Free Life, n.d.). Smoking and tobacco products do cause very negative health effects; however, it is a choice people make, and limiting this can interfere with the Declaration of Independence “Pursuit of Happiness” (Library of Congress, n.d.). The government has already taken action to decrease tobacco exposure, especially when referring to second hand smoking, so it does not infringe on others, only on one’s own health. These government interventions include: smoke free policies prohibiting smoking in certain public places, tobacco product price increases, and health communications campaigns (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).
(B)The use of tobacco is the leading cause of avoidable illnesses and deaths in different parts of the world and many tobacco users start before they reach the age of 18 (Carr, 2018). Most people, including children, are exposed tobacco advertisements from films and other types of media as well as to tobacco use by parents, close friends and relatives. Products of tobacco should be made illegal due to the adverse effects they have on society. Different measures have been implemented to control the use of tobacco. For instance, the authorities impose heavy taxation and implement strict regulations against advertising of tobacco products.
(C) Cigarettes and tobacco products are leading causes in many diseases including various cancers. Tobacco use is dependent on the individual and chooses to use tobacco products based on influences and addiction. Nicotine is the drug in tobacco that is highly addictive and prevents smokers from quitting (“National Institute on Drug Abuse” 2019). Many smokers or tobacco users would prefer to quit using, but they don’t because of their body’s physical addiction for highly addictive nicotine. Smoking is beginning to start at a younger age due to the convenience of e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes, such as juuls, can be smoked pretty much anywhere and not be detected. They are also filled with highly concentrated nicotine solutions. These solutions are often flavored to taste and smell appealing
Case Study: Irritable Infants
Note: Since this is your first foundational nursing class, this case study deals with an everyday, common situation – babysitting. This scenario was deliberately chosen since many of you may not have experience in hospital settings. The goal of this case is to learn how to apply the nursing process and sound reasoning to a low-pressure “patient” scenario.
Case: You are babysitting twin 9-month old siblings; you have been caring for them for approximately 3 hours when they both gradually become irritable. This then transitions to non-stop crying over the span of 30 minutes.
Based on your current knowledge and introduction to the nursing process, please address:
Which assessment technique you would employ to assist in determining the situation (comprehensive, problem-oriented, or focused).
Identify what assessment data are pertinent and what critical thinking measures you took to arrive at these conclusions.
Hypothesize a nursing diagnosis (or medical or collaborative) and support.
Identify one goal and one expected outcome for this situation.
Describe the best communication technique that you would use with these two infants to illustrate caring and patient-centered care.
Fountain View Hospice is an inpatient hospice that has an EHR. Because of a hurricane, the town, including the hospice, was flooded. Patients had to be evacuated and the data center was underwater. The hospice backs up its files daily and the files are stored at a vendor site across town. The vendor’s office was unaffected by the flood, so the backup files are safe. The vendor does not have the EHR application. The flood waters have receded, and the building is undergoing renovations. The vendor has stated that there is no way to recreate their application and so a full implementation of the EHR will be necessary and could take a year or more. In the meantime, the hospice will have to operate using paper health records. The hospice will have to pay to select and implement the new information system as well as manage the paper health record.
1. What else could the hospice have done to prevent having to completely reimplement the EHR?
2. Are there other issues that could have been addressed to help prevent this?

Lewis-Beck Medical Center (LBMC) is a 650-bed acute care hospital in north Florida. In the last decade, this geographic area has experienced a significant increase in the number of persons moving to here who are 60 years and older. It has become a popular destination due to a reasonable cost of living, temperate weather, close to the Gulf of Mexico, quality schools and healthcare facilities, and many university-sponsored cultural events. There are currently 17 assisted living and memory care facilities approved or being built to address this need. LBMC recognized this trend early on. Using data analytics software and statistical predictions, C-suite personnel were able to identify trends and patterns in patient care for this age group. A concerted effort was made to recruit and/or train physicians and nurses specializing in geriatric medicine. Additional staffing and locations were added to provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Physician group practices associated with the hospital have increased the number of physicians with specialty training in cardiology, oncology, and internal medicine. LBMC strengthened or established relationships with the organizations building the assisted living communities and memory care centers. Working with local universities and a community college, education and training programs were identified and implemented to meet the employment demand. The local senior center, an organization providing education, health screening, entertainment, and cultural programs for active seniors, was identified as a key stakeholder and gateway to this population. LBMC regularly evaluates internal and external data to monitor trends to meet the need of this fast-growing segment of the local population.
1. What roles does the local chamber of commerce and the economic development authority play in LBMC’s growth regarding the senior market?
Imagine you are appointed as the site coordinator for a community. You have many tasks that lie ahead of you, first and foremost is automating the community health information systems (CHIS) in order to improve efficiency and ease of access. In order to complete this as well as your other suggestions, you have been given volunteers to assist in your efforts. These volunteers, unfortunately, aren’t as savvy as you would hope when it comes to computerized order entry, which is what is needed for this task. You are told that you can either choose to customize an off-the-shelf application with the help of your volunteers which will fit your needs, or you can develop your own CHIS.
Given that you have a limited budget and a time constraint, which option will you choose to pursue and why?

part 2
Implementation of a HMIS is a complicated and intricate process that involves much planning and forethought. Last week we discussed the idea of generating questions to ask specific users about what they are looking for when it comes to the new system.
Why is it important to have end-user involvement in the implementation of the combined HMIS? Besides involving them in the pre-planning process when you asked the semi-structured questions, why is it important to continue their involvement as the process continues? How do you keep them engaged and willing to assist in the implementation?
