In this unit, we mostly talk about weight loss because the main problem in the US is obesity. It is currently estimated that 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. Since there is such a propensity of obesity, there are a wide variety of weight loss products available. For this unit, choose a weight loss supplement. This can be any supplement that you find on the internet or in your local health food store. Explain the components that are found in the supplement. Discuss the effects the supplement is supposed to have. Do you think the product would be effective based on what you learned in this course? Would you take the supplement?

We are going to call this last Homework 7 the ‘Muddy Point’. As we wrap up this class, students should think about the broad focus of sustainability (recall Lecture 2) and the variety of best practices today’s innovations and technologies are evolving to support improvements. As you read different perspectives and think about supply chains, some sustainability initiatives have potentially negative consequences (i.e. wildlife impact from wind energy) and others may not have the overall impact desired (i.e. spending more energy to make it then it will save). A vital problem solving skill requires evaluating alternatives to select the path with the greatest outcome to support triple bottom line goals. We have a long journey ahead and some technology has yet to be proven successful on any major projects as it simply may be someone’s idea that may take 30+years to actually develop and market to use.

In this homework assignment students need to think about what they learned over the course and write an original post on a sustainability concept you feel is unclear as to its ability to achieve triple bottom line goals. This may be what you seemed to think is the most fuzzy or muddy as to the viability of that sustainability concept (prioritize your thoughts and come up with one major thought). Students should further consider the economic costs and benefits as outlined in Chapter 14, as well as cutting edge technology evolving in Chapter 15 (students should research this to support their viewpoint). Students may consider the lag time it might take for research and development to enable implementation to achieve the big goals of sustainability. Students may have found simply that some ideas behind sustainability concepts just do not appear viable at all currently. These are simply examples of a ‘muddy point’.

There is no right or wrong answer for this discussion forum. It is about looking at information and finding patterns. The overriding question is, “do societies have shared values, and do these shared values have an impact on prosperity and well-being?” Be sure to look at Adam Smith’s virtues at the end, but there are also two other sources that evaluate social values.

Adam Smith insisted that the free market could not prosper without shared virtues within a society. Can societies have virtues? Adam Smith’s virtues are below. Explore Smith’s social virtues, but also look around the “index of corruption” of transparency.org. Then also consider the review of further research as discussed in the New York Times article, “Would you return this lost wallet?” By Pam Belluck. It is attached above the discussion forum if you have trouble with the link below.

What are some of the patterns you see? Are there commonalities or outliers at the top or bottom of the index? Where is the US located? In 1995, we were 15th.

If this is true, it might explain why some “undeveloped” countries have become first world economically, and others have continued to stagnate or decline. You may be interested in looking at Central American countries as these have been much in the news. If this reasoning is true, are we likely to be able to develop a stable free-market democracy in countries with high corruption?

Finally, looking at Adam Smith’s virtues for society, what are some of the strengths in the US, what are some of the weaknesses, and if Smith is correct, should we be optimistic or have reason to be concerned? Does ethics in society affect overall prosperity and the proper functioning of a free market?

In every discussion forum, two substantive interactions with other students are due before the forum close date and time.

Partnership is a critical issue facing Health Care Organizations. This is because in today’s HCOs everything is a competition. Being a part of healthcare is the act of providing quality service with empathy and compassion. Healthcare requires teamwork and networking for organizations to run effectively. It is important for all healthcare providers to understand that it is not a competition. We must work together to focus providing patients with the highest level of quality care. One of the problems that is associated with partnership is one partner trying to enforce their mission onto another partner. Every organization will have a different mission and goal and as a partner it needs to be understood and respected. When a doctor refers a patient to a home health agency to maintain care in their home the mission for that agency will be different. As health care provides the overall focus will always be providing a quality level of care for that patient. Without partnerships within healthcare providers organizations will not be able to give the highest level of care.

Culture transformation in the Health Care Organization is currently facing a critical issue. Here in the U.S., there are a high-profile report of documentation of large medical errors. This could hold the notion of culture changes as an element to the health system. Healthcare culture such as group affiliation, teamwork, and coordination are associated with implementation of continuous quality improvement practices. Cultural diversity in the health care organization is competing and overlapping professional. I currently work in a hospital setting where a dynamic culture mosaic is made up of out of multiple, complex, overlapping groups concerned with quality development. Doctors and managers help play a role with significant ways. Doctors do focus on patients as individuals’ group and view propositions that are rationalist natural sciences lens. Managers are more concerned with patients as groups and value a social science based on experiential perspective. Cultural framing of healthcare organization draws consideration on detailed features of organizational life. Culture is used as a metaphor for something the organization is thought to have. Acknowledging culture can hypothesis judicious application of the concept.

Data gathering is an essential skill to have regarding strategic planning and management in healthcare. The data collected can come in two different forms referred to as “hard data” and “soft data”. According to the text, Healthcare Strategic Planning, hard data is fact acquired from reliable sources and is quantitive, such as hospital associations and state or federal filings. Soft data is based on qualitative information such as public relations released and annual reports ( Harris, 2012). Hard data such as 10-K state report can be used by competitors to access, summary of risks, legal proceedings, and financial statements. The text, Basics of the U.S. Health Care System, highlighted ways that soft data can be used when assessing quality of care and how consumers utilize it to compare healthcare organizations. Patients are often given surveys that rate the facilities or services they receive based on specific crtierum such as, types of services received, patient satisfaction, rate of readmissions, or specifically concerning their visit such as the cleanliness of their rooms, the communication with nursing and physicians, and even how quite the floor was during the nighttime (2018).

Creative data gathering for the environmental assessment are divided into two categories: hard data, and soft data (Harris,2018, p.109). Hard data is a compilation of verifiable facts from monitoring systems, sensors, phones, hospital associations, state filings and licensure, federal reports, and public vendors (Harris, 2018, p. 109). Soft data includes qualitative information such as surveys, presentations, websites, annual reports, etc. (Harris, 2018,p.109). Hard data and soft data are used as metrics for monitoring the quality and safety of healthcare organizations. Seeking and interpreting soft data to produce forms of knowledge displayed simple quantification. Thorough qualitative interviews with management leaders of the English National Health Service were reviewed on their thoughts of soft intelligence (Martin et al.,2015). They were worried that it may show problems and obscure quality in the metric values. The hard, quantitative data used were a range of different metric statistics such as amber alert ratings and safety dashboards to highlight accurate time sights (Martin et al.,2015).
