Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.
Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare. Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.

My healthcare issue that I had previously chosen was lack of technology. Here is my discussion for that.
One of the national healthcare issues that has impacted my healthcare setting is technology. I work in a correctional facility and many of are charting is still done on paper. When I first started at this facility, our intakes would be done on paper and faxed into the computer. Since then, we have upgraded to doing the initial intakes on the computer. We still have many instances that we must get signatures of inmates and this puts us in harms way when we must hand the inmates our pens for them to sign. By having a full computerized system, we can also save money in the unnecessary tests we would need to perform to diagnose inmates that have a long history of getting treatments at different hospitals around town (Benefits of Health IT, 2017). Electronic Health Records (EHR) is being widely used in the nursing world and is greatly improving the quality care of these patients, I do believe this would also be beneficial to my workplace if it was being used to our advantage (Menachemi & Collum, 2011). I do believe that my company might not have the resources they have right now to get these new advancements in technology.
I understand that the correctional facility that I am employed at is a smaller company with not enough funding and this may be a difficult issue for them to have to find a solution to. I do believe by giving us better technology, it can be beneficial to the lives of the patients that we have to take care of. These patients sometimes are not the best historians, and by having documentation of their records and alerts to help the staff, we would be able to improve better patient care. A lot of time is also spent having to walk over to inmates around the jail to get signatures from them.
Improving our technology access for my workplace would be costly at first, but I do believe in the long run, it would be worth it with all the money spent on unnecessary testing and procedures. It would take a lot of the workload off the nurses and psychiatrists as well if we were able to access the inmate’s records from previous visits. I believe an informatics nurse would help achieve these goals for my workplace by acknowledging the changes that need to be in place for better care (Hoover, 2016).
