As one who strives to honor Christ and serve in the Human Service field, I consider myself to be a lifelong learner. Frequently I am painfully aware of my knowledge and context limitations. Yet I’m grateful God has given me a relentless passion and drive to learn, ask questions and experience life with confidence. The disciplined choice to pursuit a master’s in Human Services Counseling validates my commitment to learn and grow both, professionally and personally. The privilege to learn under those who are currently serving in various Human Services roles provides me with extensive knowledge and incentive.
In this course, be it via the video lecture interviews or weekly reading selections, I have gleaned numerous characteristics I desire to emulate, and that I believe embody an effective Human Service professional. As Dr. Kevin Corsini interviewed Brent McCraw from Pathways, the importance of the development of trust between client and care giver was emphasized (McCraw & Corsini, n.d.). As I continue to interact with others, one of the core values I hold, is to be a trusted care giver. The biblical directive, “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (King James Bible, 1796/2017, Gal 6:2) reminds me of the precious holding we do with the cares and concerns of others. I believe this burden bearing protects both the one sharing and the information that was shared.
In that same interview Brent Mc Craw articulated the importance of boundary setting between client and caregiver (McCraw & Corsini, n.d.). The wise counsel of “Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee” (King James Bible, 1796/2017, Prov 2:11) encourages caregiver and client boundary implementation. Boundary discernment and implementation is my second core value. As a compulsive care giver, I have been both affirmed in my selfless desire to serve and lovingly guided to set and live in healthy boundaries. Martin emphasized the importance of personal care, healthy boundaries and “spending time with friends and family who offer us relationship reciprocity” (Martin, 2018, p. 381). As one who finds joy in serving others, I am still learning how to set boundaries without guilt or the desire to compulsively defend my personal boundary choices.
In the interview between Dr. Laurel Shalers and Janelle Basham, the Director of the Liberty God parent Home, the necessary characteristic of adaptability and flexibility was emphasized (Shalers & Basham, n.d.). The sustained ability to remain flexible can be exhausting, yet it is essential. Today, with increased globalization and technology advancements, access to care and care givers is growing both in need and opportunity (Martin, 2018). The characteristic of unflinching hope in the face of constant change and growing need, is one I wish to develop and exude. My hope is grounded in Christ alone. I claim the promise that states, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint” (English Standard Version Bible, 2009, Isa 40:31). In the beautiful, challenging, and messy work of the Human Service professional our hearts rejoice and break simultaneously. It is with that awareness, of the unending task before me that I wish to develop trust, healthy boundaries and sustained hope.

Human Services Professionals are the beautiful masterpieces individuals have the opportunity to meet when barriers and obstacles occur in life. Human Services Professionals set the standard to be a personal missionary in one’s life, that brings hope to a individual that doesn’t have the ability or the resources to do for themselves in that moment. The three prominent characteristics I feel a human services professional should be committed to and was mentioned in the video was loyalty, empathy and flexibility.
Loyalty is an essential characteristic in this profession, because loyalty is the ability to show a strong support and allegiance to one’s well-being. Human Service Professionals have an obligation to stay committed to clients well-being and love them through the difficult moments. God’s Holy Word teaches us to Love and with genuine love you can embrace loyalty 1 Corinthians 13:7 ESV: Love bears all things, believes all things, endure all things. When love is embrace we can stay committed and love a clients through their affliction.
Flexibility is a trait that Human Service Professionals should attain, it teaches us that change and differences are acceptable to one’s well-being and as a Human Services Professional, when times of affliction occur not only is the client being revived, but I believe that the Human Service Professional is being revived, as they embrace one’s affliction through the eyes of God. When God reminds me to be flexible, God always places Psalm 119:5 on my heart. Psalm 119:5, ESV: This is my comfort in my affliction, that your word has revived me. Flexibility produces a revived soul.
Empathy is an area I need to improve in, because I’m a very bubbly and analytical person. I believe in viewing problems step by step when I just need to relax and listen to a person’s needs and understand the root issues, then ask God to extend grace to me as well as the person and serve them from there. When being analytical sometimes you miss the main point. So, I know I need God to help me bring that into subjection and learn in the moment to picture my life in someone else’s shoes.

When working in Human Services profession a person has to care for people, they have to have a warming heart and have empathy for people. They have to want to be there and not looked at what they do as a job, they are there to help others. Human Services Professionals are there to help those people who are in need, who have been through traumatic experiences especially rape, domestic violence. They have to be loyal not only to the organization but to the people they are helping. Everything the human services professionals do must come directly from the heart. They are there to make a difference in someone’s life.
Some of the characteristics that a Human Services professionals must have is empathy for the people they are servicing. Another characteristic is loyalty not only to the organization but to their clients as well. Showing that person or family who have been through so much that you care about them and their needs. You would do anything that you can within reason to help these people out and get them back to where they should be. A Human Service Professional must be flexible, they might have twenty different things going on at the same time and the one family or person that needs their attention might need it now and they have to drop everything to make sure that family or individual has what they need. Working as a Human services professional is not a job but an adventure because not everyday is the going to be the same, there will be different obstacles these families will need support crossing and not everything runs right on time. Being there when that person or family needs you the most is going to be the most important thing you may do that day. Showing these people that you care and you are concerned for their well being is one of the most important things a Human Services Professional may do.
I can see myself working as a Human Services Professional, meeting new people every day, helping those that need so they can get back on their feet and thrive in life again. Seeing a mother and her children get into that house and making it. My biggest thrill in life is seeing someone make it and succeed. I love it when I can see a family with smiles on their faces because they made it through some tough times. Sexual Assault and domestic violence are not joke, many families who have this happen to them live with nightmares and have PTSD most of their lives. They need someone they can count on that will be there for them when they need to talk, or a helping hand, some guidance on what they can do and how they can move on with their lives.
One of my additional duties in the military is the Sexual Assault Sexual Harassment Prevention Leader, if a Soldier has an issue with sexual harassment or was sexually assaulted, I am one of the people involved with the victim. I took this training because there were so many cases of sexual assault and wanted the training so I can be more of a help to Soldiers and their families. As a leader I have to know the proper way in handling a sexual assault, sexual harassment case. The military has no tolerance for sexual assault, sexual harassment.
God speaks to us all the time, some of us listen and most do not. His works in King James Bible speak of empathy in Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Ephesians 4:32 And Be ye kind to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christs sake hath forgiven you. This means to me we must be kind to all and be there when people need help. Everyone needs help in their lives and we must be there for those who need a helping hand regardless what it is.
Loyalty is where all people need to be loyal not only to God but to one another. We must watch one another’s back and care for one another instead of kicking them to the curb and not helping them. God speaks about loyalty in Matthew 24:45-47 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season, blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing, Verily I say unto you, that he shall make him ruler over all his goods
Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. In Discussion 12 Deborah said “One of the definitions of faith is belief, trust in and loyalty to God, Patience is defined as bearing pains of trials calmly or without complaint and also defined as steadfast despite opposition, difficulty and adversity.” We must be patient with all and not complain when we have to help someone because they are down and out.
God speaks of flexibility (adaptive) Not that I speak in respect for want; for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, there with to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound; every where and in all thing’s, I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
