A minority person’s perception of health care can significantly impact their health status. Over the years, the United States has been plagued with disparities in health care; racial and ethnic minorities have been receiving lower-quality health care, leading to lesser preventative health services (Shepherd et al., 2018). There are many examples of minority groups which include but are not limited to African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans. Research showed that compared to the general populations, Hispanics and African Americans are much more susceptible to heart and liver disease (Shepherd et al., 2018). More so, even with the introduction of Medicaid, minorities may suffer insurance insufficiency, leading them to avoid visiting a hospital at all. The feeling is much stronger when they have encountered and lived discrimination, where they have been left with huge bills to cover. Finally, suppose minorities have experienced discrimination in hospitals or healthcare institutions. Therefore, it most likely leads them to avoid institutions as much as possible, worsening their health problems and eventually death, especially since many minority groups have higher rates of fatal conditions and diseases (Shepherd et al., 2018).
The health status of minorities can definitely be impacted by their perceptions of health care. It is well documented that minorities suffer more disparities in health care than the general population (Shepherd, 2018). The health disparities that minorities face include language barriers, socio-economic status, poverty, discrimination, and lower health literacy (Shepherd, 2018). According to a study done in the Midwest, Native American and African American participants reported lower levels of treatment satisfaction and higher levels of health care provider discrimination. People are less likely to seek medical care if they believe they will be discriminated against in any way especially if they are a minority. Many people who participated in the study said that they felt they received poor treatment either sometimes or often but felt it was due to their cultural background instead of racism. Another reason why minorities may not seek medical care is lack of education and they may feel intimidated or scared by health service processes.
Scientists have long debated the influence of genetic factors over environmental factors. Sadly, there are some people who have a distinct disadvantage by living in an environment that can cause them illness or injury. Homeless people are often exposed to poor weather which can cause everything from exposure to freezing temps, rainfall, even heatstroke. People who live in an area without clean drinking water can be exposed to dysentery. People who live in areas that are exposed to carcinogens are likely to get cancer. Areas with air pollution can cause health issues such as asthma or COPD. Exposure to lead can cause heart disease, respiratory problems or cancer.
The health risk factor I chose to read about is the Co-occurring Health Risk among Sexual Minority Youth. This article studies the mental health effect this population experiences. This article stated that youth who fall into this class score at a higher rate for suicide then other people of similar age. The largest thing I learned from this article would have to be that gender minority youth (including transgender) is separate from sexual minority youth (Lesbian, gay, bisexual). Youth within this group seek mental health services at a higher rate than heterosexual youth. This is due to the discrimination they face. This group also is reported to have a higher rate of substance misuse also. This article breaks down their research by using samples of GNC and cisgender sexual minority youth who call into a crisis hotline. This study uses two different models and studies to show the comparison on what crisis level children fall under within this population group.
