This week we are learning about computer and online crimes.
Discussion Board #7: This week you will learn a little about one of the newer types of crimes that law enforcement has been attempting to deal with-Computer Crime. Computer crime is moving at a rate that Law enforcement can barely keep up with it-from the investigative processes, to the creation and modification of laws to criminalize behavior associated with computer use. But in many cases, questions arise as to the legality of law enforcement accessing computer or online activity of suspicious persons. Much like the wire taps of phones done in the “old days” computer access and “spying” on database information has required legal recognition and permission. But to what end? Where should the line be drawn? Since the world has become much smaller with the creation of the world wide web, should we live with the guaranteed right of privacy afforded in the US Constitution, or is it time that we look at the needs of the world with regards to privacy and safety, and modify the Constitution to fit the needs of today? For this discussion, discuss these two points:
What priority should law enforcement place on investigations of the various online crimes that occur? (Name the crimes you are discussing and what priority-be sure to think of all levels of crime, including terrorism).
How should we look at the legality of Online crime, and modify the Constitution to protect the rights of the citizens, yet keep us safe?

The first juvenile court in the United States was established in Illinois in 1899. The purpose of its development was to establish an atmosphere of rehabilitation rather than punishment as was seen in the criminal court system. In the past quarter century, a greater number of violent crimes have been committed by those under the age of 18. Society’s reaction has been to remove such youth from the rehabilitative arm of the juvenile courts and try many of these individuals in the adult criminal system. This has prompted a significant amount of research in the area of adolescent development, juvenile justice, and the practice of forensic psychology with juvenile offenders.
The MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice was founded to provide research on various questions related to juvenile crime and justice. To date, the Foundation has provided, for public review, much empirical data on the differences among juveniles of various ages and their relationship to adult criminals. This important research has covered topics from juvenile competency to stand trial to juvenile psychopathy. The research helps to improve understanding of the unique characteristics of juvenile offenders, in order to best address public safety concerns and provide the best treatment for these individuals.
This week’s Application Assignment is constructed partially to help you become more familiar with a specific area of concern within juvenile forensic psychology.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review the selected pages of Chapter 13 in Introduction to Forensic Psychology. Consider the rights and protections afforded to juvenile offenders, and the problems that might exist within the juvenile court system.
Review Chapter 7 in Introduction to Forensic Psychology. Reflect on the developmental elements of juvenile aggression.
Review the Macarthur Foundation’s Report on Adolescent Development and Juvenile Justice. Focus on the three research areas of competence, culpability, and adolescent potential for change, and the issues related to the treatment of juvenile offenders.
Think about what concerns emerge in the evaluation and assessment of juvenile offenders.
Select a contemporary area of concern within juvenile forensic psychology that you believe to be important to address and consider why this is a concern and how it might be addressed.
Explore the research addressing this contemporary issue of concern. (Note: You may find the information in this week’s optional reading section helpful in your search for a topic and information about area of concern.)
Explain the contemporary area of concern within juvenile forensic psychology that you selected.
Explain why you believe this is an important area of concern to be addressed.
Explain how this area of concern might be addressed.
Be sure to be specific and use examples.
Psychologists and forensic psychology professionals who work in correctional settings often are called upon to assess inmates for their risk of potential harm to others. In many cases, this can be at the heart of evaluations conducted by parole boards, whose job it is to decide if a particular inmate should be released into society. Research on conducting risk assessments and predicting violence potential has shed light on the science and art of such assessments. Empirical data has shown that certain static and fluid risk factors are related to violent acts. Research studies also have concluded that certain instruments can increase the ability of assessors to accurately predict someone’s future behavior.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review the article, “Historical and Personality Correlates to the Violence Patterns of Juveniles Tried as Adults.” Pay particular attention to the assessment instruments/procedures and how they are used to determine violence and associated risk factors.
Think about how the results reported in this article might be applied in a correctional setting.
Review the article, “Felony and Violent Recidivism Among Supermax Prison Inmates in Washington State: A Pilot Study.” Pay close attention to the important data and results, and any other key “takeaways” of the study, and consider how the study might be used in a correctional setting.
Review this week’s DVD program, “Application of Psychological Research – Correctional Settings.” Focus on what makes effective and ineffective criterion measures for analyzing recidivism, violent crime, and institutional adjustment.
Using the Library, select a research article related to the assessment of violence potential.
Review the article you selected. Note how the study was conducted, the important data and results, and any other key “ takeaways” of the study.
Consider how the results of your chosen study might be used to predict the violence potential of someone in a correctional institution or who has been released on parole.
