David Crary (2008) noted that in the United States, the fifty states spent more than $49 billion on corrections. The rate of increase in prison costs was six times greater than for higher education spending. Another striking statistic provided in the first chapter is that one in 30 men between the ages of 20 and 34 are behind bars, which makes the United States the world’s incarceration leader. For black males in the same age group the figure is one in nine. This week you are investigating corrections origins and history to recognize where we have been, to think in terms of where we are going in the corrections profession. We will be studying correctional concepts from evidence-based theory and best-practices to a reality of changing paradigms.
Based upon your review of the readings, and investigation, what do you believe that works the best for punishment for all types of offenders from the lowest to the highest risk? Does jail or prison always need to be part of punishment? What are the forecasted issues and trends? Is there a danger to the community by not incarcerating all law violators?

Ava is the operations manager of Pacific Pods, a manufacturer and distributor of the large containers. The workforce reporting to Ava is culturally and demographically diverse, and she values their talent and dedication. After talking to the HR director and reading many articles on the subject, Ava decides that if she displayed even more cultural sensitivity than she does now, employee retention and engagement might be even higher. She then embarks on an initiative to display even more cultural sensitivity.
The first person approached by Ava was Deon who is African American. At the end their conversation, Ava stated “I hope that you and your family have a great Kwanza this year.” Deon responded good-naturedly, “And a happy cinqo de mayo to you and your family.” (Durbin, 2019). The second person Ava approached was Gloria. Ava stated, “Do you and your neighborhood friends play a lot of shuffleboard and bingo? My folks and their friends do.” Shrugging her shoulders, Gloria said, “I don’t care about shuffleboard and bingo; instead, I text back and forth with my four grandchildren.” (Durbin, 2019). Next Ava approached Tyler; a young accountant who was wheelchair bound. Ava told Tyler that she admired his courage because professionals who are wheelchair bound would look for work at home, instead of going through the rigors of commuting. Tyler told Ava that he was no different from other people and that he liked a challenge. Ava then approached Lindsay, who had many visible tattoos and several body piercings. After talking to Lindsay about cloud computing, Ava said, “Please don’t ever think that your tattoos and body piercings will ever hold you back from promotions at Pacific Pods. We are an equal opportunity employer.” Being caught off guard Lindsay stated, “Why is my body even a subject for discussion?” (Durbin, 2019). After making contact with the staff members, Ava decided to wait for informal feedback before continuing her cultural sensitivity task.
Questions
What is your evaluation of appropriateness and effectiveness of Ava’s cultural sensitivity initiatives?
Ava’s want to be more culturally sensitive is a good that she wants to reach the employees however her way of doing so is out of line and extremely offensive. The statements she said to each could land her in a lot of trouble if the employees wanted to push the issue. Ava needs to be more aware of what she is saying and how it comes off to people.
What suggestions can you offer Ava to be even more effective in displaying cultural sensitivity?
Simply put, Ava needs to think before she speaks. The way she is going about her statements are unprofessional and unethical. She also needs to learn how to communicate better also. She could also ask questions if she is unaware of how what she wants to say will come across. If different if you are close to the people you work with and you guys have a joking relationship, then her actions would be deemed appropriate. Ava could also look into taking classes on effective communication as well.
Explain if you found any one of Ava’s four cultural sensitivity initiatives to be offensive.
All of Ava’s comments to the staff were offensive and inappropriate. In today’s time and atmosphere, Ava and her comments would be viewed as racist, body shamming, disability discrimination, and ageism. All of which are a big no no for companies and what they are willing to deal with when it comes to employees especially someone in a management role.
