During the assessment/analyzing the environment phase of strategic planning, a company is tasked with understanding the various demands in the market. They also must examine what other companies are doing and take inventory of their own portfolio to determine if they are offering products and services that are relevant and comply with industry standards (this is largely why we conduct SWOT/TOWS analyses). This assignment will help simulate one contemporary issue HCOs are having to assess. You will write a paper to qualitatively analyze this issue.
Since 2009, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has impacted how hospital systems prepare for the future. In your book, you read about historical data being needed to help paint the picture of where an organization has been and how they have performed. The impact of the ACA, changing the payment structure from fee-for-service to the theory of covered lives, changes the dynamic in which organizations operate. If a HCO is paid a flat rate per year for each life covered under the new healthcare plans, the strategy for the future changes in many ways. The focus changes from increasing volume at high cost facilities such as hospitals, to wellness of the patient, and providing the right care, at the right time, and at the lowest cost possible (think about an ambulatory setting).
The focus of this weeks assignment is to make sure that the strategic plan secures the future for organizations and its leaders by crafting a viable future business. To control costs in an environment created by the ACA, hospital based systems need to focus beyond the hospital, and try to incorporate all aspects of the patients care and wellness.
Analyze at least 3 different types of services or programs that a healthcare system may look at incorporating into their portfolio as they develop their strategic plans to answer the industry shift away from the fee-for-service mentality and towards a more value-based system. As you do your research, you will see examples of organizations who are very progressive, and some that are focused on the fee-for-service world for as long as they can. You will need to include at least 2 external sources besides your text. This is a tough topic to decide on. While I support women being in control of their own bodies, this is a bit different. Women who repeatedly get drunk while pregnant are making the same poor choice repeatedly. Even one time of binge drinking (more that 3 alcoholic drink servings per occasion) can have damaging effects on the fetus, during any stage of the pregnancy (Dejong et al., 2019). Excessive alcohol use while pregnant is something everyone knows is dangerous for themself and their unborn child. There are countless resources available to help. There really isn’t a good excuse for a mother to continue getting drunk while pregnant. I think intervention before the baby is born will be the most beneficial, rather than removing the baby from the mother after it is born and has already suffered the permanent damaging effects of the mother’s drinking. Early intervention will be the only hope for the baby, so having the mother remain in a treatment facility until the baby is born is the best option. A person loses their privilege to drive after repeatedly driving under the influence, so why not apply the same rules when another human life is involved? Perhaps time in the treatment facility while pregnant will help out the mother tremendously too, she will get the help she needs for herself and her baby after it is born, instead of trying to figure it out with the added stress of a newborn later.

Currently, SAMHSA is offering Service Grant Program for Residential treatment for pregnant and postpartum women who have any substance use disorder(Services Grant Program for Residential Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women, 2022). This includes alcohol. The program is reaching out into the community to find a residential program that places an emphasis on harm reduction and family bonds. The women will be individually screened. There is no one size fits all model for addiction. Working towards a comprehensive program will also include low-income mothers who have children under 18. Part of this grant is screening the children for signs of fetal alcohol syndrome, behavioral issues, cognitive, and mental acuity. This will give the program a chance to address the developmental stages of the children while also continuing to support the mother with counseling and wrap-around services. The grant would also provide assistance to the father and other extended family members if the mother wishes to include them in the program. Understanding that there are some relationships that are not healthy for the mother or child the program will respect the wishes of the mother.
This is my answer to the question of jail or residential treatment. It is nice that America is moving in the right direction for the family.

My results to the Bar Exam were very interesting. Turns out that I do not know as much as I thought I did. There are a variety of myths out there surrounding how to consume alcohol and I admit to falling for a few of them. When I was in college, a common theme you would hear prior to a night out on the town is: “Liquor before beer; you’re clear.” Though I know that to be ridiculous, I still learned some interesting facts from this quiz. Like white wine being produced from red grapes. Or, Harvard, one of the top Ivy League schools, constructed a brewery on campus. It also debunked the myth that having coffee will sober you up. When you drink excessively, you are bound to get a hangover. And unfortunately, you just must let it run its course. You also hear so many reports about alcohol poisoning incidents on college campuses, so it was surprising that the question relating to binge drinking on college campuses being an epidemic was false, it caught me by surprise.

Taking the Bar Exam was more informative than I thought it would be. I definitely learned a lot. I was surprised to learn that drinking in moderation can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. I read that moderate alcohol consumption, meaning one or two drinks per day, has been shown to reduce chances of developing Alzheimer’s. They also found that drinking wine, over other alcoholic beverages, showed more mental health benefits, specifically reducing the risk of dementia and cognitive impairments associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
It is important to note that regular drinking in excess has an opposite effect. Instead of preventing cognitive impairment there is a 300% increase in the likelihood of developing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and other mental health illnesses. This just goes to show that in everything, moderation is key (Alzheimersorganization.org, 2021).
Porchia-
For this assignment I went with a movie that was made in 1976 titled Sparkle (Sparkle, 1976). This movie is about three sisters and one of them becomes addicted to drugs and dies. While watching this movie I did become emotional , I literally cried , and felt angry on certain scenes. There was a remake done a few years ago, I believe in 2012 but I have yet to watch the newer version, mostly because I am afraid I might not enjoy it as much as I did the original. Something I recently learned is that this movie was loosely based off of the real life of a famous Motown singer. The message that I have always gotten from watching this movie is that drugs are bad, and that I should stay away from men who sell drugs and prey on younger women. Before I found out that this movie was based off of a true story, I had felt as if it were based on real life struggles and situations, simply because of how the movie depicted each characters situations. I think the point of this assignment was to watch something and see how serious the impact of substance can be, and how substance abuse can tear apart families and lead to death and tragedy.

Blow was based on a true-life depiction of an average man turned drug kingpin. Starting with humble beginnings the young man aspired to be able to provide for his family. The family he was born into as well as the family had created. The young amn went to school to acquire and education and to become successful later in life. In high school he was a football and a star on his team. He had plans on attending college. Getting wrapped up in the business with bad company, Jung learned how to make money and how to make it fast. The movie depicts the real-life struggles of individuals living in poverty faced with an opportunity to do and have better than they were initially intended. Seeing how many lives were taking by the illegal substance is a huge eye opener. Not only the users of the drug that overdosed and died, but he members of the Cartel that lost their lives living by the street laws. Families were destroyed on all side of the spectrum. In watching this there was a better understanding to the saying, “There is only two ways out the street game and neither is retirement.” It was heart wrenching to see basic humans just trying to get money can corrupt an entire nation. The consequences they faced for the damage they had done was minimal, to my liking.
